Today is the 70th anniversary of the 6 Gallery poetry reading in San Francsico. David Wills, editor of the literary journal Beatdom has written,
“Without the 6 Gallery reading, it’s quite possible that there would not have been a Beat Generation or San Francisco Renaissance, and that the names associated with these movements would be obscure at best. That begs the question of whether we would’ve had the hippies and the punks and all the other cultural movements of late 20th century America had this event not taken place or had it gone differently.”
That’s pretty heady stuff. To mark the historic event Wills has published the 25th issue of Beatdom: The San Francisco Renaissance, a 240+ page volume chock full of essays, poetry, memoirs, and a book review.
I’m grateful to have my essay “Rexroth and Kerouac: An Antidote of Sorts” included.
